HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Heath Effects
Acute - Swallowed Ingestion of this product may irritate the gastric tract, causing nausea and vomiting
Acute - Eye  May cause eye irritation.
Acute - Skin May cause skin irritation.
Acute - Inhaled   Inhalation of product vapours may cause irritation of the nose, throat and respiratory system.
Chronic Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause irritation and eventually dermatitis.

FIRST AID

Swallowed Do not induce vomiting. Wash out mouth with water. Do not give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.  Seek medical attention.
Eye  If contact with eye(s) occurs, wash with running water holding eyelids open.  Take care not to rinse contaminated water into the non-affected eye.  In all cases of eye contamination it is a sensible precaution to seek medical advice.
Skin If skin or hair contact occurs, remove contaminated clothing and flush skin and hair with running water.  Wash contaminated clothing before re-use.  If irritation occurs seek medical advice.
Inhaled Remove victim from exposure – avoid becoming a casualty.  Remove contaminated clothing and loosen remaining clothing.  Allow patient to assume most comfortable position and keep warm.  Keep at rest until fully recovered.  If patient finds breathing difficult and develops a bluish discolouration of the skin (which suggests a lack of oxygen in the blood -cyanosis), ensure airways are clear of any obstruction and have a qualified person give oxygen through a faced mask.  Apply artificial respiration if patient is not breathing.  In event of cardiac arrest, apply external cardiac massage.  Seek immediate medical attention.
First Aid Facilities Eye wash and normal washroom facilities.
Other Information  For advice, contact a Poisons Information Centre.  Phone 131 126 or a doctor.

OTHER HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Precautions for Use
Exposure Limits Name STEL   TWA
    mg/m3 ppm mg/m3 ppm
  Ammonia  24   35  17 25
  Formaldehyde  2.5 2     1.2   1
Other Exposure Info.

No exposure standards have been established for this material by the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission (NOHSC).  However, exposure standards for ingredients are stated above.

TWA - the Time-Weighted Average airborne concentration over an eight hour working day, for a five day working week over an entire working life.  e.g. as above, the TWA for ammonia is 25ppm and for Formaldehyde is 1ppm.

STEL (Short Term Exposure Limit) – the average airborne concentration over a 15 minute period which should not be exceeded at any time during a normal eight hour workday.  e.g. as above, the STEL for ammonia is 35ppm and for formaldehyde is 2ppm.

According to current knowledge these concentrations should neither impair the health of, nor cause undue discomfort to, nearly all workers. These Exposure Standards are guides to be used in the control of occupational health hazards.  All atmospheric contamination should be kept

to as low a level as is workable.  Exposure Standards should not be used as fine dividing lines between safe and dangerous concentrations of chemicals.

They are not a measure of relative toxicity.

Eng. Controls   Use only in a well ventilated area.  Local exhaust ventilation will be required in confined areas or where natural ventilation is not sufficient to maintain concentrations below exposure limits.

PERSONAL PROTECTION

Respirator Type  If engineering controls are not effective in controlling airborne exposure then an approved respirator with a replaceable ammonia vapour filter should be used.  Reference should be made to Australian Standards AS/NZS 1715, Selection, Use and Maintenance of Respiratory Protective Devices; and AS/NZS 1716, Respiratory Protective Devices; and AS/NZS 1716, Respiratory Protective Devices, in order to make any necessary changes for individual circumstances.
Eye Protection  Safety glasses with side shields or goggles should be worn as described in Australian Standard AS/ANZ 1337 – Eye Protectors for Industrial Applications.
Glove Type    Where skin contact is likely to be prolonged or repeated impervious PVC or nitrile rubber gloves are recommended.
Clothing    Suitable protective clothing should be worn e.g. cotton overalls buttoned at neck and wrist.  When large quantities are handled the use of plastic aprons and rubber boots is recommended.
Protective Equip.
Work/Hygienic Practices

Ensure a high level of personal hygiene is maintained when using this product.  Always wash hands before eating, drinking, smoking or using the toilet.

Flammability
Fire Hazards Non-flammable.  Residue after evaporation is combustible.

SAFETY HANDLING INFORMATION

Storage and Transport
Storage Precautions   Keep containers closed at all times.  Use good occupational work practices.  Do not store near acids or oxidising substances.
Transport    Not classified as a Dangerous Good, according to the Australian Code for the Transport of Dangerous Goods by Road and Rail.
Proper shipping  None Allocated

Spills and Disposal
Spills & Leaks  Slippery when spilt – avoid accidents.  Increase ventilation.  Evacuate all unnecessary personnel.  Wear protective clothing to minimise skin and eye exposure.  If possible contain large spills, absorb with inert absorbent such as vermiculite, sand or dirt and place in suitably labelled steel container.  Mop up material and place in to the same container.  Hose down residues or minor spills with excess water.
Disposal

Dispose should be in accordance with the relevant local, state and federal government regulations.  The recommended method of disposal is controlled incineration by approved agent.

Fire Explosions Hazard
Fire/Explos. Hazard This product is non-flammable.  However, following evaporation of aqueous component, residue may burn if involved in a fire.
Hazardous

Fumes, smoke, ammonia and oxides or carbon (carbon monoxide and Combustion Byproducts     carbon dioxide).

Fire Fighting Procedures Fire fighters to wear Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and full protective clothing if risk of exposure to vapour or products of combustion to minimise skin exposure.  Water spray may be used to cool down heat exposed containers.
Extinguishing Media  Use appropriate fire extinguisher for surrounding environment.
Hazchem Code None allocated.
